Everton coach Paul Clement spills the beans on reasons behind improved defence

Everton first-team coach Paul Clement has had his say on why the club’s defence has improved so drastically this season.

The Blues have one of the best defensive records in the Premier League so far this campaign and Clement has explained the process behind this happening.

Clement confessed the Toffees backline “needed improvements” but the manager’s tactics and strategy have played a key role in their defensive progress.

“I think it has come from the manager’s strategy and tactics,” said Clement as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“If we are stronger as a unit defensively we have a much better chance of getting positive results.

“It’s come from the players a lot – some of that is from recruitment in the summer, and also in general, from the team, it has come from that work on the training ground – repetition and drills and exercises in order to get to that point where defensively we have been pretty sound.

“I think everyone realised what happened at the end of last season, and in the season in general, there needed to be improvements in the squad and changes and strengthening in certain positions.”

Bodes well.

Clement’s comments bode well for Everton moving forward, they have coaches and a manager who have realised where their team needs improving and they’ve gone and done it.

The acquisitions of Conor Coady and James Tarkowski have certainly helped matters at the back for the Blues alongside shot-stopper Jordan Pickford.

And it’s this way of making the Toffees a more solid opponent to face at the back which is proving to be a priceless attribute this campaign.

Everton are by no means to finished the product at the back and there are still improvements to be made but results have shown they are not far off it.

It’s nice to see Lampard’s side moving on from their torrid 2021/2022 campaign in a positive manner and it looks like last season’s woes have been all but forgotten.

However, the boss will need to be backed even further in the coming transfer windows if the Blues want to compete at the very top of the league.
