Simon Jordan would not take Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to World Cup with England

Simon Jordan has admitted that he wouldn’t take Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the World Cup with England if it was up to him.

The Toffees hitman has missed a large portion of action over the last season-and-a-half, and recently returned to action with a goal against Crystal Palace in only his second start of the season.

That has seen him linked with a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad as an understudy to Harry Kane, but Jordan told talkSPORT [31 October] that he wouldn’t be among the options he considered to go to Qatar.

When asked which three strikers he would pick for the squad, Jordan replied quickly with Harry Kane, Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Roma forward Tammy Abraham as his options.

But he later revisited the question and admitted that Newcastle’s Callum Wilson deserves a call-up too based on his recent form, meaning there was no room for Calvert-Lewin even if he took an extra forward to the tournament.

Ouch

As bad as that may seem that Calvert-Lewin has dropped so far down the pecking order at international level, it shouldn’t be unexpected in all honesty.

He barely played during the entirety of last season with Everton struggling to stay in the Premier League, and this season he’s been restricted to just three starts so far.

This is while Toney is putting up huge numbers at Brentford and Wilson has fired Newcastle into the top four with goals and staying fit, which has been his biggest problem too.

If the World Cup was in the summer when it was supposed to be he wouldn’t have been considered, and if it was next summer he would definitely have a better chance.

But he should spend this winter at Finch Farm pushing for full fitness to take the second half of the season by storm, which could see him get a head start on getting into the squad for Euro 2024.
