Everton accounts open door for outsiders to ask questions – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...
Dan Plumley has insisted that the door will be opened for plenty of questions at Everton as they continue to remain quiet about their next set of accounts.
The Finance Expert admitted that the Toffees have until March at the absolute latest to post the figures, as they did in 2021, but that usually means something is not quite right.
It comes after questions from the Everton Supporters’ Trust surrounding when the next set of accounts will be published, something which led to secrecy with no date yet confirmed.

“The why is there is a lot going on but the front and centre is that you have nine months from the end of your accounting report date to get those accounts on Companies House,” he exclusively told Goodison News.
“When you see these March issues from the previous account, that’s the absolute latest it can be, you can file for extensions and things. Basically, you’re working on nine months, so when the club say they’re probably going to be out by March, that’s the absolute time you can get them.
“You can do it at any time and that’s where the problem is, the ones that leave it as late as possible, they’re the ones that get focused on and you ask more questions about, because it’s a case of some of the accounts being out already, and people say if they can do it, why can’t this club? That’s where the questions come, so officially you have up to nine months and it’s the company’s discretion at when they do that.
“The problem from a transparency point of view, if you’re taking the absolute up to nine months and beyond, people start to poke around and ask questions about that and it probably means something is not quite right there. That is the thing in the background, but you probably expect them around March which will open the door to plenty of questions because you can do it at any point.”

This is more critical than ever for Everton after Financial Fair Play dangers last season led to serious discussions with the Premier League with big losses posted again.
With the new stadium being built, takeover talk swirling around and money once again spent in the transfer window, it is anyone’s guess what these accounts may look like.
Unfortunately, given the lack of clarity given to the Supporters Trust, they could be waiting until March yet again.
