Bryan Oviedo sends Twitter message to Everton fans as image emerges after Costa Rica win v Japan

Former Everton left-back Bryan Oviedo has thanked Toffees fans for their continued support after he starred in Costa Rica’s crucial win over Japan at the World Cup.

The 32-year-old defender started for his nation as they blew Group E wide open with a snatch-and-grab 1-0 victory – scoring with their first shot on target of the tournament.

In winning, Costa Rica became the first team to concede seven goals in a game and then win their next match at a World Cup since Paraguay in 1958.

Everton

Oveido spent five seasons at Goodison Park where he played 50 times, before parting ways and moving to Sunderland.

The Costa Rican still speaks fondly of the club and confirmed his love for the fans when tweeting: “Thank you Toffees for all the love and support I receive from you. Impossible not to keep all of you in my heart!

‘Once a Blue, Always a Blue!”

Refreshing

Many Everton fans would be right to assume that Oviedo has moved on from Merseyside both on the pitch and in memory.

But his love for the club is a refreshing sight, even if he did fail to reach the standards required of him during his ever-so-slightly tortured time at the club.

The left-back played just 50 times in five seasons at Goodison Park and was used mainly as a squad player in case of injuries to first-team stars such as stalwart Leighton Baines.

His part in Costa Rica’s historic victory at the World Cup is a pleasant surprise and his love for Everton is admirable, considering he has played at Sunderland, Copenhagen and Real Salt Lake over his last five seasons.

Costa Rica will now face an uphill challenge against Germany in their last Group E match and will look to knock out Hansi Flick’s side in the group stages with another huge upset.
