David Beckham gushes over Everton star Jordan Pickford after stunning performance for England at World Cup

David Beckham has delivered a three-word verdict on Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford following his crucial role in England’s victory over Senegal at the World Cup.

The 28-year-old kept his third clean sheet of Qatar as The Three Lions ran away eventual 3-0 winners, but although the scoreline was eventually convincing, Pickford was drawn into a stunning save in the early stages.

As Senegal pressed heavily and held the edge over Southgate’s men in the early exchanges, Pickford denied Boulaye Dia with a brilliant save with his left arm from close range.

England legend Beckham was equally impressed with the goalkeeper’s performance, as he took to Instagram to praise the Evertonian.

He posted a three-word story, that said: “In safe hands.”

Delivering on the big stage

Pickford is a just different animal when he puts on the Three Lions top.

Not to say he hasn’t been brilliant for Everton over the past two seasons, but he exudes a different confidence when playing under Gareth Southgate that seems to be missing in a club shirt.

That is a testament to Southgate’s man-management skills, and Lampard should take note of the unwavering trust the England manager has given Pickford.

Although he wasn’t called into action for large portions of the last 16 matches, the Evertonian was on sharp alert to thwart the Senegalese threat when his team fell under increasing pressure.

He controlled his box with authority throughout the evening and even shifted England’s tactic of playing out from the back when he realised John Stones and Harry Maguire were getting caught out by the Senegal press – kicking the ball long instead.

Toffees fans should be thrilled with Pickford’s performance but must try and keep him out of the clutches of the Premier League’s top sides – who may now be keeping close tabs on the keeper.
