Sky Sports pundit pushes Everton to pounce on Marcus Thuram early after World Cup final appearance

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Everton are “definitely” right to pursue a move for French World Cup final forward Marcus Thuram, according to Kevin Campbell.

GOAL’s Ignazio Genuardi reported on Twitter (10 December) that the Toffees were interested in the Borussia Monchengladbach attacker along with Premier League rivals Tottenham and Newcastle, with rumours of an offer from Bayern Munich apparently wide of the mark.

And although the 25-year-old’s contract expires in the summer, Campbell, a Sky Sports pundit, doesn’t think it is worth the risk to wait that long and feels a push to sign him next month could be needed.

On whether the club should be making a real play for the Frenchman he exclusively told Goodison News: “Definitely. There aren’t many times players like this become available.

“A French international, strong, quick, play up top, play out wide, and going to be cheap considering…

“If you can get him in January, fine. His contract’s going to be up in the summer, maybe you want to get him in the January window and not wait for the summer because I’m sure there will be a lot of clubs in for him.”

Thuram assisted Kylian Mbappe’s dramatic equaliser in normal time during the final in Qatar on Sunday (18 December), and has 13 goals plus four assists for his club this season from 17 appearances.

He looks to fit the exact profile of player Frank Lampard needs to ignite his attacking forces this season, and could be available for a small fee in January if the Bundesliga side decide to accept whatever cash they can get without a new contract in place.

Whatever that fee would be, it is certainly going to be far below his full market value, and if it means that Everton can jump in front of a crowd to get a deal done it could be a huge game-changer for the rest of the season.
