Everton financial investigation could be underway as £170m figure causes confusion – Kieran Maguire

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has suggested Everton could well be under investigation over their losses in the three years leading up to 2021.

The Toffees posted losses of £372million, which is £170million more than Premier League financial fair play rules allow for.

Goodison News had previously been told by finance expert Daniel Plumley that the Toffees could well be taken to court after Leeds and Burnley complained about the financial situation at Goodison Park.

Maguire has been left perplexed as to how the Toffees have posted such losses when being compared to other Premier League clubs.

“They could well be investigating Everton’s figures or they might not be and I think even Burnley might have given up on this particular issue,” said Maguire (Price of Football Podcast, 06m 30s, 29 December).

“There’s been no indication over the course of the last six months that there’s been any further attempt to get some form of compensation.

“I think it’s very difficult to work out where Everton got £170million’s worth of Covid-related costs.”

Doesn’t add up

It appears the Burnley court case issue has certainly moved to the back burner, with the Championship club now seemingly less interested in attempting to gain any form of compensation. However, the figures which have emerged in relation to the amount Everton had lost are quite alarming when compared to other Premier League sides.

What is also concerning is that the Toffees haven’t come out and explained the accounts and why the losses were so alarmingly high. Potentially a little bit more transparency is required from those at Goodison Park to explain the losses and confirm that there’s no investigation currently ongoing.

The news surrounding the sum £170million sum almost confirms the fact that a new owner and boardroom shakeup is required on Merseyside.

However, at the moment, it’s unlikely to see any potential investor wanting to take the reins with the financial implications which could well be going on behind the scenes.
