Everton would require ‘huge bid’ to sign Chuba Akpom in January window

Everton would require a “huge bid” to sign Chuba Akpom in the January window, but a transfer move away from Middlesbrough is unlikely.

Journalist Kaveh Solhekol reported on Sky Sports (3 January) that the Toffees are in the hunt to sign the 27-year-old who is the current top scorer in the Championship this season.

However, Graeme Bailey says that Middlesbrough has already activated his one-year option, so they are under no pressure to sell this month and would appear unlikely at this stage.

“No surprise to see Championship leader scorer Chuba Akpom linked with move, but Middlesbrough have already activated his one-year option so no need to sell this month and would appear unlikely at this stage. Understand it would take a huge bid to get him,” wrote Bailey on Twitter.

The striker was almost released last summer by Boro, but his remarkable form has seen several clubs registering interest in him.

The Toffees need to sign a striker in the January window and Akpom would be a smart addition to the side.

The striker has scored 13 goals for Boro this season in the Championship. He is a versatile attacker who can play as a striker or as an attacking central midfielder.

Boro have done everything they could to keep him so there’s no need for them to sell the player this month, and a move looks unlikely at the moment.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has returned to full fitness while Neil Maupay has been very poor since joining the club from Brighton last summer. The club need more firepower in the forward department, but whether they will submit a big offer to sign Akpom in January remains to be seen.
