David Moyes could return to Everton this season with Frank Lampard on the brink

David Moyes could return to Everton as manager with Frank Lampard teetering on the brink at Goodison Park, according to Phil McNulty.

The current Toffees manager is under enormous pressure with the club 18th in the Premier League, despite an improved showing in the FA Cup at Manchester United on Friday night (6 January).

If Farhad Moshiri decides to remove him in the coming weeks chief BBC football writer McNulty believes former Everton boss Moyes and ex-Burnley man Sean Dyche are the primary candidates to come in, while another previous manager, Roberto Martinez, is unlikely amid a “quite incredible” situation at international level.

Everton

Speaking live on BBC Merseyside on Monday morning (9 January, 7.56am) McNulty said: “There are people available. Sean Dyche is available… For some reason known only to myself, and I have expressed this to my colleagues in the media over the last few months, I’ve always had a feeling that David Moyes would reappear at Everton at some point.

“It would have to be this season I would think and he’s struggling a little bit at West Ham at the moment so I think he would be under consideration.

“The name of Roberto Martinez surfaced again when he left his job with Belgium, but he now apparently is in line to fall upwards with the Portugal job which I find quite incredible.

“Martinez was run out by the fans when he left and it would almost sum up Everton perfectly if the first manager sacked by Farhad Moshiri would reappear £500million later but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

“So I think you might be looking at people like Sean Dyche, [and] David Moyes is someone in my mind who may come back.”

Reset

The ongoing turmoil at Everton under Moshiri has plenty of those connected to the club pining for the days of stability under Moyes.

The Scot has done a fantastic job at West Ham over the past couple of years, but himself is struggling to hold onto his job with the Hammers in a similarly perilous position.

Perhaps a reunion is exactly what the club and their former boss need right now, especially with the Irons boss’ ability to thrive without investment.

Everton Frank Lampard

In fact it is a record summer spend in east London which appears to have derailed his project with West Ham, and given the ongoing financial constraints at Goodison Park perhaps he could rescue the situation.

Removing Lampard at this stage would throw the past six months down the drain and continue the culture of hiring and firing under the current regime, but with results and performances largely dreadful of late, there is a certain appeal to veteran figures like Moyes and Dyche.

However, it is a mark of the situation that one man currently in danger of losing his job in the Premier League amid relegation fears, and another who actually did so last season at one of the teams Lampard overcame to stay up, appear to be the best options.

Either could do a job though, whereas Martinez endlessly landing on his feet since leaving Merseyside the first time seems to rule him out, but for now Lampard clings on ahead of a massive relegation six-pointer against Southampton on 14 January.
