Gabby Agbonlahor shares Frank Lampard sack prediction despite Everton vote of confidence

Gabby Agbonlahor still believes Frank Lampard could be sacked by Everton despite being given a vote of confidence by Farhad Moshiri.

The Telegraph reported (4 January) after the Brighton defeat that Lampard was on the brink of being dismissed from his position at Goodison Park.

However, the Everton owner sent an open letter on Wednesday (11 January) expressing his support for the 44-year-old despite the Toffees’ poor run of results.

Agbonlahor has suggested that support could well be short-lived with Southampton set to visit Everton in what is shaping up to be a huge relegation clash.

“I think sometimes a vote of confidence can last one game. They say they’ll back him no matter what and then they lose to Southampton and that confidence is gone,” said Agbonlahor (talkSPORT Breakfast, 12 January).

“It’s panic from the fans and the board can make the decision but Frank Lampard has got the team playing okay football. They did well against Manchester City, were poor against Brighton but they did well in the FA Cup.”

Make or break

Regardless of the vote of confidence, this weekend’s game against Southampton will be vital in determining Lampard’s future. Southampton are coming off an impressive win against Manchester City and if they triumph at Goodison Park the writing could well be on the wall for Lampard.

The 44-year-old is certainly not solely to blame for Everton’s dreadful campaign. The board have been completely inept for a number of years and something has to change if the Merseyside club are going to enjoy any success in the future.

Everton

If Lampard is sacked the new manager would face exactly the same issues which have haunted a number of Everton bosses. There has been a lack of attention to detail when it comes to signing players and financial irresponsibility from the board.

Considering the dire nature of the current squad it’s certainly hard to place all of the blame under Lampard’s shoulders.

It’s going to be a tough test but three points are an absolute must on Saturday (14 January).
