Tony Cottee shares Everton FFP verdict as he calls for board decision on Frank Lampard
Tony Cottee has suggested on Twitter (22 January) that the Everton board needs to back Frank Lampard and sign a few forwards in the January window if the Financial Fair Play allows them to do so.
The Toffees lost 2-0 against West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday (21 January), and Cottee observes that Lampard’s side offered nothing going forward.
Lampard is without a win in the last eight league games as Everton lie 19th in the league table. Cottee doesn’t want the manager to be changed, rather he urges the squad to stick together.
“Everton were poor yesterday and didn’t offer any attacking threat at all. The Board need to back Frank and sign forward players (if FFP allows?), u can’t keep changing Managers in my opinion. Tough few months ahead but the squad needs to stick together,” wrote Cottee on Twitter.
No way
Cottee is right that it is not ideal to change managers every now and then.
But at the same time, you have to understand that the manager is not doing enough, and the squad will lose faith and confidence in their abilities.
Most importantly, this is the best group of players Lampard is operating it and this is the best they can do. He is getting tactically outclassed in every single game and he doesn’t have a clue how to get a win away from home.

The fans have tried their best to lift the team, but they can only do that much. It’s the players who have to deliver on the pitch, and the manager needs to get it right.
The situation at the club is far from ideal. The Toffees are operating on a tight budget, but this squad is not that bad as it is made to look out.
Lampard should be backed in the market, but if the results still don’t improve there’s no point sticking with him.
