Anthony Gordon sale to finance ’emergency’ Everton deal to sign Marko Arnautovic

Everton selling Anthony Gordon could allow the Toffees to fund a deal for Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic, according to The Telegraph.

CBS journalist Ben Jacobs claimed (CaughtOffside, 25 January) Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign the 21-year-old attacker.

The Telegraph have since reported (25 January) that former West Ham striker Arnautovic is on the Toffees’ radar as an “emergency” January signing.

It’s been suggested the 33-year-old Austrian forward would be looking for a two-and-a-half-year deal, should he return to the Premier League.

Typical

This is simply a typical Everton signing. Arnautovic would come to Goodison Park on huge wages and provide the club with absolutely no sell-on value when his contract comes to a close.

The sad reality is that this is a move the club have almost been forced into making due to their own mistakes. The failure to get the Arnaut Danjuma deal over the line has led to the panic button being pushed – and at present, a player like Arnautovic could give Everton a short-term boost.

Everton

Due to past mistakes at Goodison Park, the board must only be looking at dragging the Toffees away from the relegation zone as quickly as possible. Long-term solutions can wait till the summer, with there now only a matter of days left in the transfer window.

If Everton fail to add more depth to their squad, it will be an extremely tough task for whoever eventually takes the managerial hot set on Merseyside. At least two attacking players are required to give the Toffees a chance of maintaining their Premier League status.
