Jim White clashes with Danny Murphy live on talkSPORT after Everton manager update

TalkSPORT presenter Jim White and Danny Murphy clashed live on air over the latest update regarding Marcelo Bielsa becoming Everton’s new manager.

The Toffees have undergone yet another dreadful Premier League campaign, currently sitting in the relegation places after 20 games ultimately leading to Frank Lampard’s sacking on Monday [23 January].

The club have hierarchy have yet to announce a replacement, and reports have emerged revealing [Daily Mail, 23 January] that former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is the favourite to replace Lampard in the Everton dugout.

However, according to the latest updates [Daily Mail, 24 January], the Argentine boss has reservations about taking over stating that the squad is too slow to play his high-intensity style.

And speaking live on air for talkSPORT [25 January], White and Murphy got into a squabble regarding Bielsa’s suitability for the role.

White said: “I mean, Bielsa would go to crazy crazy measures, crazy limits to win a game, crazy.”

Murphy replied: “What do you mean? You can’t do so much as a manager.”

White then went on to state: “Yeah, but Danny we heard so much when he was at Leeds, all sorts of different procedures he was introducing, the discipline was incredible if they didn’t get it right the first time, they did it again and again and again.

Murphy replied: “He took time to implement his style, he takes time. Can’t do it. If you got a longer project and you think you know what doesn’t matter what happens we go down, we trust you to get back up, we need this place changed, you become the master, you build.

“That’s not what they need, they need to stay in the division.”

Murphy’s right

Considering the huge lengths Bielsa goes to implement his high-intensity style at his clubs, it doesn’t make sense for Everton to appoint him right now.

The Argentinian loves projects, not short-term roles and that’s what the club feels like to him at this moment in time.

The Toffees will need to appoint someone ready to drag the club from their dreadful position and lead them to Premier League safety once again.

Bielsa is a decorated coach, but his style will be incredibly difficult to implement midseason and certainly, the squad he’d have at his disposal certainly won’t allow him to be successful in the long term.

If the club can appoint a short-term fix for now, secure their top-flight status and then appoint Bielsa at the end of the campaign to build a project at Goodison Park for the future, then that may be the way to go. But, even that looks difficult to do.

These are desperate and incredibly pivotal times for the Toffees hierarchy. Their Premier League status depends on it.
