Sky Sports pundit applauds ‘great business’ as Everton seal £45m transfer exit for Anthony Gordon

Clinton Morrison has admitted that he was surprised that Newcastle offered £45m to sign Anthony Gordon from Everton this month.

Everton agreed a deal worth £40m plus £5m in add-ons to allow Gordon to leave the club after he went AWOL and refused to attend training, giving soon-to-be new manager Sean Dyche much needed funds to work with in the final days of the transfer window.

But speaking on Soccer Saturday live on Sky Sports [January 28, 10:14 of video], pundit Morrison admitted he doesn’t know where Gordon gets into the Newcastle team right now and feels the sale is “great business” from the Toffees.

“I don’t know, I think it’s great business for Everton. I thought when Chelsea came in [in the summer] and were offering £60m I thought it would have been great business for Everton.

“That’s not knocking Anthony Gordon, because last season he had a spell for about 7 or 8 games where he was outstanding, scoring goals, assisting, and he was really good, looking sharp.

“This season he hasn’t hit those heights at all. Hasn’t scored enough goals, not enough assists, yeah he’s picked up a few injuries but listen, he’s a talented young player.

“But I was surprised when Newcastle came in and they bid for £40m because you’re right Jeff, I don’t know where he’s going to play.”

Brilliant

You’d be incredibly hard pressed to find an Everton fan who isn’t delighted that this transfer deal has gone through at the price we’ve got for him.

Gordon was a big reason why the club managed to avoid relegation last season, but his performances this season have done a complete 180 and he’s been a big part of why we’re facing it again this year.

His attitude has been awful this year after he didn’t get a move in the summer to Chelsea, and now that he’s gone we have got some money to spend to strengthen the side.

We need great power up front and options defensively too to avoid the trouble we’re in, and while Dyche is short on time to improve the squad he now at least has money to make options more attainable.

Gordon has four goals and no assists this season, so he won’t be much of a miss in that department, and the fact he didn’t want to be here should make it all the easier to replace him.
