Everton transfer news: Work permit issue halted deadline day move for attacker – journalist

Everton were halted in their quest to sign one particular attacker in the late hours of deadline day due to a “work permit issue”, according to Dean Jones.

The Toffees were hoping to complete a late flurry of action on deadline day following the sale of Anthony Gordon and the hiring of new manager Sean Dyche, but the club failed to get any fresh faces through the door.

And former Eurosport journalist Jones believes throughout the chaotic day, the club were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign numerous players due to finances and, in one particular case, a work permit issue.

He told GiveMeSport: “As the night wore on, I know they were still looking at options. But everything came back to finances – either loan fees or wages have been causing trouble.

“With one attacker, they looked like they might have a breakthrough, but then there was a work permit issue. It was a bad day.”

Dreadful

What a terrible end to a terrible window for Everton deadline day was.

If fans had hoped the £40m plus funds gathered for Gordon would be put to good use, then they were mistaken, as the club continuously failed to lure players to Goodison Park.

Ultimately, the problem was the club all but left themselves two days to try and sign a host of players – a strategy that was never going to succeed.

If the club had targetted certain players early in the window under Frank Lampard and stuck to their guns, then they might have had more success, but as it was, Everton looked to be clueless.

Dyche now has one hell of a job on his hands, and it will be a minor miracle if he manages to propel the Toffees out of their current slump.

All hands need to be on deck at Goodison Park, and hopefully, with the Englishman at the helm, the club can avoid relegation.
