Clinton Morrison ‘surprised’ Everton failed to sign players on transfer deadline day
Clinton Morrison has shared that he was left “surprised” that Everton didn’t sign a single player in the January transfer window.
Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport, Morrison said that the Toffees did try to bring some players on the deadline day but couldn’t get those deals done.
The BBC pundit is “disappointed” because he feels Everton should have added two or three quality players to boost their survival hopes. The Toffees are 19th in the Premier League at the moment and are without a win in their last eight league games.
“We’re surprised that they didn’t bring a few more characters in,” said Morrison. “They did try deadline day but they couldn’t get deals over the line.
“I’d be a bit disappointed because we needed a few numbers. Two or three added quality in that to the squad to make us better.”
Poor planning
Everton actually targeted a lot of players in the January window, but poor planning has ruined everything.
The club should have taken the decision to sack Frank Lampard early and give the new manager ample time to work his way out, find new targets, and bring them in.
Instead, they persisted with Lampard and made attempts to sign players. The case of Arnaut Danjuma is the best example. He agreed to join Everton because of Lampard but changed his mind the moment he knew that he would be playing under a new manager.

He moved to Tottenham instead. This is nothing but poor planning. It was left with Sean Dyche on the transfer deadline day to use some of the money from Anthony Gordon’s sale to bring in new players, but it seldom works like that.
Clubs usually don’t want to lose their key players in January, and it was always going to be difficult for Everton to land players like Conor Gallagher, Viktor Gyokeres, and others.
Let’s hope Dyche can get the best out of his players, and help the team climb up the table. It will be difficult, but with proper tactical set-up, it is still possible.
