Sean Dyche makes Everton ‘ugly stuff’ tactical admission ahead of Liverpool clash

Everton boss Sean Dyche has admitted that he will have to do “ugly stuff” against some teams and use different tactics as he looks to bring flexibility.

The Toffees boss made a winning start to his managerial career at Everton as he guided them to a 1-0 win in the Premier League against Arsenal, their first victory since 22 October.

The Merseyside outfit has only netted 16 goals in 21 Premier League games this season, and Dyche will have to be more creative in increasing the club’s goal output.

However, despite using different tactics for different situations, Dyche has admitted that “the base” won’t change.

“There are different ways of creating chances, it is just that sometimes we forget,” said Dyche, as quoted by Liverpool Echo.

“Sometimes we think the only way to create a chance is to roll it through the six-yard box. That is not the only way of creating chances, you have to work in both boxes, you have to find a style and way of working that can work in both boxes so you stop it going in your net and then in the other.

“If we can add more quality at times (that can help) but you have to remember the opposition we faced (Arsenal). They ain’t bad, they are top of the league for a reason.

“So therefore you have to do the ugly stuff against those sides and against other teams maybe we can be more progressive in our play. Different games for different reasons, different tactics for different situations, but the base won’t change.”

Same method in the next game?

Are we going to see Dyche implementing a similar method in the next game as well?

What appears from his statements is that Dyche will probably look to play more expansive football against teams that are in and around the relegation zone, or better say against teams in the bottom half, especially at home.

On the other hand, he is happy to go with a more ugly approach against top teams, be it at home or away, which seems to be a more pragmatic approach.

What is important to note here is that Dyche is probably urging his players to be more creative in the final third, if they can, against teams they feel they can beat. However, he won’t change the base of the team, which indicates that he is not going to make drastic changes to his style straight away.

The Toffees will face Liverpool in their next Premier League game at Anfield. The Reds are going through a rough patch this season, and there’s no reason why Everton can’t get a positive result there if they can stick to their game plans.
