Mark Lawrenson predicts outcome of Everton clash v Liverpool

Everton will face Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday night (13 February) at Anfield, and Mark Lawrenson predicts a defeat for the Toffees.

The former BBC Sports pundit has suggested that it is going to be a “horrible” game, and expects Liverpool to edge the Merseyside derby with a 2-1 win while speaking to Paddy Power.

The Toffees finally picked up a win after eight games in the Premier League under new manager Sean Dyche as they defeated Arsenal 1-0 last Saturday (4 February).

Everton

“It will be interesting to see what Jurgen Klopp does in terms of his lineup,” said Lawrenson to Paddy Power.

“The defence was all over the place and I think Nat Phillips should come in to combat Dominic Calvert-Lewin as he’s no-nonsense, head it, clear it, no frills but he’ll put himself in areas that other central defenders won’t.

“I think Liverpool will win but it’s going to be a horrible game, it almost always is, but I remain to be convinced by Liverpool at the moment. Liverpool 2-1 Everton.”

Tactics

Liverpool are going through a poor run of form at the moment, and it is the ideal time for the Toffees to play them. The Toffees will head into this game with some confidence after their win against the Gunners, and there’s no reason why they can’t get a positive result at Anfield.

Dyche is likely to take a pragmatic approach for this game as what they did against the Gunners. They remained solid at the back and kept on frustrating the opposition.

Everton

At the same time, Everton should look to score from set-pieces and make the best use of whatever little chance they create.

Under Frank Lampard, the Toffees had a wretched record away from home. It felt as if Lampard doesn’t have any clue on how to pick up a win away from Goodison Park, and that needs to change for the club quickly.

Everton are 18th in the league table with only 18 points on board. Every point here is crucial at the moment, and it will add tremendous confidence to the side if Dyche can mastermind a win over Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield.
