Dennis Geiger Everton links surely mean Goodison Park end for Tom Davies

Everton have been linked with a move for Hoffenheim midfielder Dennis Geiger – and that could spell the end of the road for Tom Davies.

According to Kicker on 8 February, the Toffees are battling Eintracht Frankfurt and Benfica for the 24-year-old midfielder who is out of contract in the summer of 2023.

BILD journalist, Christian Falk, has since suggested (Caughtoffside, 10 February) Geiger has been lined up as Sean Dyche’s first signing.

As for Davies, the 24-year-old was on the bench for the former Burnley boss’ first game in charge against Arsenal and he’s endured a tough season to date, having featured in just four of the last 13 matches for the Toffees.

The midfielder has also been liked with a move away, with Scottish giants Rangers showing January interest (4th Official, 9 January). Furthermore, Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett claimed (Sky Sports, 11 January,) the Merseyside club were actively looking to move Davies on, with a permanent departure preferred.

The latest news of Everton’s interest in Geiger could well mean the writing is now on the wall for the midfielder. He’s endured a tough time of late and a move away could well be for the best, particularly with his contract ending in the summer.

He’s at an age where he needs to be playing regularly. If he stays at Everton, there’s a good chance he will end up being sent out on loan to a Championship club.

If the Hoffenheim man does arrive, it would potentially push Davies even further down the pecking order at Goodison Park. One player in and one player out seems like the most likely solution here.
