Jamie Carragher baffled by Jordan Pickford after error in Everton loss v Liverpool in Merseyside Derby

Jamie Carragher was absolutely baffled by Jordan Pickford after his error allowed Liverpool to score the opening goal against Everton at Anfield.

The Toffees defended well and almost took the lead when they hit the post from a James Tarkowski header, only for Mohammed Salah to score just 12 seconds later putting the touches on a ruthless counter attack.

But speaking on commentary live on Sky Sports (13 February, 20:36) after the goal, Carragher admitted there were big question marks about Pickford for his role in the goal.

“Wow.. Liverpool nearly one-nil down and now they find themselves one-nil up,” he said.

“And the finish from Mo Salah is fantastic.

“But you have to question the goalkeeper. I mean, where is he going? He finds himself in no-man’s land and they’re the fine margins of a Merseyside Derby.”

Poor

It’s very rare that Pickford lets Everton down, especially in recent seasons, but this is really poor from him.

His position in the box is questionable anyway, but why he shuffles across the goal before the ball has even gone past him is just bizarre.

Everton

There’s just no reason for it, because even if the ball does go past Salah, Gakpo is right there and would have been able to get to it before him anyway.

It’s poor judgement from the England number one and sums up our defensive issues right now, but we have to get behind him and support him after one mistake.

He’s earned that with his performances over the last two years or so and there is no doubt that he is our best option, so we need him confident and back at his best for this relegation battle that we have on our hands for the rest of this season.
