Chris Sutton slams Everton duo for big mistakes as Sean Dyche faces reality check v Liverpool

Everton suffered a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday night (13 February) and it’s a “reality check” for Sean Dyche, as suggested by Chris Sutton.

Speaking on BBC Radio Football Daily Podcast, the popular pundit says that the “two big mistakes” from Jordan Pickford and Conor Coady ultimately made the difference between the two sides.

Sutton feels that the Toffees need to stay positive and pick themselves up quickly as they are battling for survival in the Premier League.

“It is a reality check,” said Sutton on Football Daily Podcast (13 February).

“They had a great response against Arsenal but they have to pick themselves up, dust themselves down. I think it is in the final third where they lacked and that is something Sean Dyche has to address very quickly.

“It’s a sore loss because it’s a derby game. Two big mistakes from Pickford and Conor Coady, ultimately that was the difference between the two teams.”

Injury

It was always going to be difficult for the new manager without any new players coming to the club in the January window. On top of that, the club lost a key player in January with Anthony Gordon joining Newcastle.

Everton’s best chances of survival lie in picking up points at Goodison Park, and that’s why the next two games are absolutely vital for them.

The Toffees will face back-to-back games against Leeds United and Aston Villa at home, and they have to get six points from those two games. They cannot afford to drop points at Goodison Park, otherwise, it will become very difficult for them to avoid relegation.

Another major concern for Dyche is the injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He hasn’t been flying this season, but he remains the club’s best striker. He keeps on picking up injuries at intervals, and it is really frustrating for any manager.

Dyche started with Ellis Simms against Liverpool. He is an inexperienced player at this level and no blame can be attached to this young man for failing to test Liverpool’s defence.
