Everton must blow rivals out of water for Viktor Gyokeres after transfer admission made

Everton must blow potential rivals out of the water to land Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres in the summer transfer window.

Irrespective of where they finish, preferably better if they stay in the Premier League, the Toffees must try to sign the 24-year-old striker who has been in red-hot form at the moment.

The Toffees were interested in signing him during the January window, according to TEAMtalk [21 February], but face competition from the likes of Leeds United and Bournemouth.

Gyokeres has admitted that he was never close to leaving the club in the January window, but the club told him he can find his own way next summer.

“It wasn’t that close because the club and the coaches said before the window opened that they wouldn’t sell me no matter what,” he told TuttoSvenskan, relayed by Fotboll Skanalen [22 February].

“Which money came in or which club bid. They wanted to keep me for the rest of the season anyway, then you can take it from there.”

It means there could be an opportunity for Everton to sign him if the player decides to move on. Coventry appear to have given him the freedom to choose his next option – whatever it is – in the summer.

The striker has scored 14 goals this season in all competitions and he could be a handy addition to the Toffees squad.

Gyokeres will enter the final 12 months in his contract after the end of the season, and Coventry could be willing to cash in.

The Toffees have made a good start under Sean Dyche, and they have moved away from the relegation zone.

There’s still a lot of football left to be played, and the club is not out of the danger as yet. It would become easier for the Toffees to lure him if they stay in the Premier League than dropping down to the Championship.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has badly struggled with injuries while Neal Maupay has turned out to be a big flop.

Despite the fact that Everton have a lot of talented youngsters in their ranks like Ellis Simms, Lewis Dobbin, and Tom Cannon, they still need an in-form striker like Gyokeres.
