Everton transfer news as AS Roma defender Chris Smalling eyed for move

Everton are one of a number of Premier League clubs eyeing up a transfer move for AS Roma defender Chris Smalling, according to 90min.

The report shares how Smalling has “revived” his career in Italy after joining AS Roma from Manchester United back in 2019.

Fulham, Leicester City and West Ham United are all said to be keeping tabs on Smalling alongside Everton with a potential shock Premier League return on the cards.

“Roma defender Chris Smalling is the subject of interest from several Premier League sides, sources have told 90min,” as quoted by 90min. (24 February)

“The centre-back has revived his career since leaving Manchester United in 2019, joining the Serie A giants on an initial loan before making the move permanent a year later.

“90min understands that there are a number of English clubs looking to bring him back to his home country. High-flying Fulham – where Smalling began his professional career after joining from Maidstone United – are interested, as are Everton, Leicester and West Ham.”

Interesting.

Smalling definitely seems like a Sean Dyche kind of player and the true professional could fit in very well at Finch Farm under the guidance of his compatriot.

He’s become an integral part of the Roma squad over the last few seasons and has featured in all but one game for the Serie A giants in their campaign so far.

With Conor Coady yet to agree on a permanent deal at Everton, a move for Smalling wouldn’t be completely far off the mark, should the scouser not commit to Goodison Park.

His time in the Premier League at Manchester United may be a slight worry for some fans, however, he was the centre-back of that side during a tumultuous time.

Nevertheless, Smalling seems fairly happy to stay in Italy if given the opportunity to do so with the defender stating that he is “very confident” that he will sign a new deal.
