Everton transfer update as Sky Sports pundit reacts to what he has heard on Neal Maupay exit amid swap deal prospect

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell is “not surprised at all” by the news that Neal Maupay could be leaving Everton after just one season at Goodison Park.

Fabrizio Romano relayed comments from the Frenchman’s agent via Twitter on 21 March that Salernitana in Serie A wanted him, where Toffees target Boulaye Dia is currently playing on loan before his move is made permanent at the end of the season.

And TV Oggi Salerno reported three days that the Italian side will make another move for Maupay in the summer, despite just one goal for Everton, and suggested a swap deal may be in the offing for Dia, something which Campbell can see happening.

The Sky Sports pundit spoke exclusively to Goodison News and reacted to the prospect of Maupay leaving: “Yeah I’m not surprised at that, when you consider what’s been going on, how things have panned out for him.

“I’m not surprised at all. It hasn’t quite worked out.

“I was thinking him and Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be playing up top.

“Remember he’s come in under the regime of Frank Lampard, and obviously now the football isn’t conducive maybe to his attributes.

“It can happen. I don’t think he fits into what Sean Dyche wants to do anyway so I could see him moving on.”

On the prospect of the Toffees going after a swap deal for Dia he added: “Possibly, if Everton are interested, it’s a deal to be done isn’t it?”

Maupay’s move hasn’t worked out at all so it would likely make sense to move him on quickly either way, but if he can be used as a makeweight to bring in a replacement it seems a no-brainer.

That it is so logical probably makes the Everton hierarchy less likely to get it done, but since actual transfer funds are likely to thin on the ground this summer using an unwanted asset to help fund a deal is a welcome workaround.

A decent performer and Brighton, Maupay has never fit in the Toffees line up as a lone striker, so he can probably added to the list of disappointments in the transfer market under Farhad Moshiri sooner rather than later.
