Everton: Ruben Vinagre suffers long-term achilles injury, may require surgery

Ruben Vinagre may miss the rest of the season for Everton after suffering a long term achilles injury which may require surgery, Sean Dyche has confirmed.

The Portuguese left-back joined on a season-long loan last summer but hasn’t made a single start in the Premier League, with both Lampard and Dyche preferring Ben Godfrey as an understudy to Vitalii Mykolenko.

And now the 24-year-old could miss the rest of the season with the manager confirming he has an injury which will see him out for “some time”, with a decision due “imminently” on if he will undergo surgery.

“He’s got an injury unfortunately that’s going to keep him out for some time,” he said.

“It may need surgery, we’re not sure yet. He’s seeing a specialist but that decision will be made pretty imminently I would think.”

Waste

Well Vinagre may now go down as one of the very worst signings in Everton history if this is to be the end of his loan spell.

The Portuguese ace has managed just 24 minutes of Premier League action this season, while he made two starts in the Carabao Cup and played the full games.

But ultimately the deal has been a complete waste of time really, with neither manager this season even looking to give him a look-in ahead of Mykolenko and Godfrey.

His injury can’t really be a blow to the team because he never plays, but it does mean that should the team suffer some more injuries they could find themselves in a bit of a pickle with Seamus Coleman still ruled out and Godfrey playing on the right in recent games.

Ultimately though we’ll wish Vinagre well and send him back to Portugal in the summer, then we’ll forget this whole transfer ever happened.
