Jim White reacts to Dele Alli developments at Everton as Karl Robinson gets emotional

Karl Robinson provided an emotional defence of his former player Dele Alli, claiming that he still has the hunger to play at the top level, in a conversation with Jim White for talkSport.

Robinson was Alli’s boss at MK Dons where he made a stunning breakthrough leading to his move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2015.

Now, the player faces an uncertain future at Everton and in football generally, following recent controversies after he returned to England from his loan club, Besiktas.

The 42-year old, who Oxford United recently sacked, provided an emotional response when asked by Jim White how his Alli’s career had got to this stage.

“It’s gone pearshaped, what has happened,” said the Scottish broadcaster.

“It’s a difficult one this, because people will criticise me for maybe being transparent in my protection of him,” Robinson responded.

“But I saw the photos we all saw at the weekend and I got that sinking feeling. He has got a big heart and I don’t think people respect. I think he needs to come out of the firing line now.

“I think he needs time to reflect and accept responsibility for some of the mistakes he’s made.”

Actions speak louder than words

It is understandable that Robinson wanted to show a public display of support for the much-maligned Alli, especially considering the relationship that the pair still have, but people will be sceptical.

The attacking midfielder has a further year left on his contract at Goodison Park but there is no chance that he will feature under Sean Dyche as things stand.

The only way back would be if he immediately shows some contrition for his recent actions then concentrates on his recovery but there are question marks over his entire future in top-level football. Does he have the hunger for it, can he show the character to get back to playing regularly, wherever it may be?

That remains to be seen and no matter what is said by those with Alli’s best interests at heart, only one person can change the perception by his actions and that is the man, himself.
