Robbie Fowler admits Everton fans will hate his suggestion as Farhad Moshiri verdict shared

Robbie Fowler has suggested relegation to the Championship could well be a “blessing” for Everton as the Toffees fight to secure their Premier League status.

Sean Dyche’s side travel to the East Midlands to face Leicester City on Monday (1 May) looking for their first win since 11 March.

Writing in his Sunday Mirror column (page 73, 30 April), the former Liverpool striker admitted relegation would be a good opportunity for a “reset” at Goodison Park.

“I know their fans will hate the suggestion, it [relegation] may just be a blessing for them,” said Fowler.

“Let’s face it, the club and their eccentric owner Farhad Moshiri need a reset.”

Uncertainty

Relegation can be a good thing for clubs are who are in a financially stable position. For example, Norwich were more than happy to move between the Premier League and Championship, whilst operating in a smart way.

The situation is slightly different for the Toffees. There are a number of financial issues clouding the club at present. The Premier League charge is yet to be resolved and there’s the small matter of the new stadium.

Relegation to the second tier will see Everton lose a significant amount of money, and it’s hard to see how they could benefit in any way. Parachute payments could play their part, but an immediate return to the top flight would be a definite requirement.

In the past, we’ve seen some huge clubs spend years out of the Premier League. Leeds are the best example. The Yorkshire side fell as low as League One and have only just found their feet again. Something similar happening to Everton cannot be ruled out.
