Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin leaves Sky Sports pundit in disbelief after what he did in Leicester City draw

Alan Smith was stunned by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s “incredible” miss as Everton drew 2-2 at relegation rivals Leicester at the King Power.

In the closing minutes of the first half, with the Toffees trailing 2-1 after giving away their lead following a strong start, Dwight McNeil drove forward and played a ball across the six-yard box from the left.

Calvert-Lewin was there to tap in from close range but somehow only managed to pass it into Daniel Iversen and incredibly let a leveller go begging, and Smith couldn’t believe it.

Speaking on the live Sky Sports match commentary (1 May, 8.45pm) Smith said: “It’s a yard out virtually [for] Calvert-Lewin, gets a nick off the defender and he just doesn’t catch it. Incredible.”

He added: “If Everton end up losing this Calvert-Lewin will be having nightmares about his miss, underneath the Leicester crossbar virtually.

“Just doesn’t open up his foot. That’s all he needed to do.”

Wild

How the Everton striker missed that chance only he will know, as even with a slight deviation on the ball across it seemed harder to miss from where he was.

There was a period in the first half where the injury-ravaged number nine looked like the dynamic forward that the club has been crying out for amid the terrible luck he’s had with his fitness.

He was barged to the ground by Timothy Castagne to win an early penalty which he dispatched high into the net, and the confidence it gave him seemed to propel him around the pitch for a short time after.

But as things fell apart in defence and midfield to allow Caglar Soyuncu and Jamie Vardy to put Leicester in front the whole Toffees team appeared to struggle under the weight of the pressure, and that must have affected Calvert-Lewin for the miss.

Alex Iwobi’s second-half equaliser rescued a point on a night where both sides perhaps should have won it and neither will be overjoyed with a draw, while Seamus Coleman may have been lost for the final games.

The performance was better than it has been, but that alone isn’t enough to rescue this side when the result leaves them in the bottom three still.
