Sean Dyche ruthless Nathan Patterson verdict shared by Sky Sports pundit amid Everton injury news on Seamus Coleman

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell says Sean Dyche is “right” in his tough verdict on Nathan Patterson at Everton, as an opening arises in the wake of Seamus Coleman’s injury.

Dyche had said on 20 April, via the Liverpool Echo: “Patto is a young player still, you forget that – they’re developing players, they’re not rounded Premier League bona fide players, they’ve got to develop and learn about that.”

The Scot was brought off the bench when his captain was stretchered off at the King Power on Monday night (1 May), but Campbell accepts that the Toffees boss might be right about not being fully up to the challenge yet.

In reaction to Dyche’s comments the Sky Sports pundit exclusively told Goodison News: “Well he sees him every day doesn’t he?

“And it’s true, he’s not [a bonafide Premier League player].

“He’s not the first name on your team sheet in defence.

“He’s learning his trade. He’s only young. So it does make sense.

“That’s not to say that he won’t become one, but at this moment in time the manager’s going with a bit more experience.”

Coleman may not play again this season despite revealing on Wednesday (3 May) that he hadn’t suffered an ACL injury as initially feared [Everton Twitter].

Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate’s usage at full-back has not been fruitful so Patterson is surely the man to go with, bona fide or not.

He has experience enough from earlier this season to be better than a player used out of position, so he has to take the opportunity to convince his manager to change his view.

It is undoubtedly a blow to lose 34-year-old Coleman either way thanks to his ongoing influence in the team, but somebody is going to have to step up and Patterson seems most logical.
