Everton could avoid £300m Goodison Park scenario after May development

There’s certainly a lot of uncertainty engulfing Everton at present, with the Toffees potentially heading towards an unprecedented scenario in the Championship.

Firstly, the Blues have never played their football outside the top flight. Championship football would be first for everyone associated with the club. Another unprecedented scenario for Everton to deal with is their wage bill in the Championship.

Football finance expert, Kieran Maguire has revealed (via Twitter, 4 May) that the Toffees would have the highest wage bill in second-tier history, with their current bill amassing £312million.

It would be a staggering amount to pay, but, there’s hope. The 5-1 demolition of Brighton on Monday 8 May has given Evertonians reason to be cheerful. It was a performance we haven’t seen at all during the 2022/23 season. Dwight McNeil was unplayable, Abdoulaye Doucouré was immense, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin was back to his best.

There’s now hope coursing around Goodison Park. The players have shown they’re capable of scoring, which has been absent all season.

With Manchester City, Wolves and Bournemouth to come, Sean Dyche will be targeting another four points before the end of the 2022/23 campaign. 36 points should be enough for Everton to secure their league status and avoid setting the record for the highest wage bill in Championship history.

The away fixture against Wolves and a home clash against Bournemouth are certainly winnable games, particularly with Julen Lopetegui’s side and the Cherries all but safe.

With Leeds facing Manchester City and Leicester playing Liverpool, this weekend promises to be another pivotal one in the battle to beat the drop.
