Everton to dodge ‘catastrophic’ scenario despite £400m+ cloud over Goodison Park

Much has been made of the financial situation which could engulf Everton if the Toffees are relegated to the Championship.

The Guardian reported on 6 May that a “potentially catastrophic” fate awaits the club if they are relegated to the second tier for the first time in their history.

With the new stadium on the horizon, a significant wage bill and a number of players who would straight up refuse to play in the Championship, there’s a lot to be concerned about. Furthermore, with losses of over £400m+ on the records, financial issues could well be around the corner if Championship football graces Merseyside.

However, Sean Dyche’s side have given Evertonians hope. The win over Brighton was nothing short of sensational. Dwight McNeil produced one of the best individual displays from any player in the 2022/23 season. The former Burnley man was electric. With Manchester City, Wolves and Bournemouth to come, there’s now fresh hope at Goodison Park.

There’s hope that the “catastrophic” prospect of Championship football can be avoided. Everton, probably more than any other side would feel the ramifications of relegation.

The reduction in finances is stark and has caused many a great club to fall by into the doldrums. Leeds United spent 16 years outside the top flight, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby reside in League One, and Bolton and Portsmouth dropped to League Two and were moments from non-existence.

This fate can now be avoided. Dyche has given us a reason to be optimistic heading into what is an extremely tough test against Manchester City on Sunday 14 May. Pep Guardiola’s side are coming off of a draw against Real Madrid and are looking to tighten their grip on the Premier League title.

However, a full Goodison Park can be a match for anyone. There’s a chance for Dyche to firmly put the catastrophic scenario off the agenda.
