Graeme Souness criticises Sean Dyche despite ‘Extraordinary’ Everton win v Brighton

Graeme Souness has blasted Sean Dyche for not making major improvements at Everton since taking over as manager despite their “extraordinary” 5-1 win v Brighton.

The Toffees climbed out of the relegation zone with three games to go thanks to a huge 5-1 win over Brighton on Monday (8 May), and now host treble-chasing Manchester City at Goodison Park on Sunday (14 May).

But Souness claims the manager hasn’t made the improvements expected of him since coming in and that’s why Everton are still under threat, and feels that they need someone to step up and deliver the unexpected to secure their safety.

Everton

“The unpredictability of the Premier League means that the smallest margins will now dictate who gets relegated from it. I mean, half a percent. One per cent,” he wrote in his Daily Mail column (12 May).

“It was an extraordinary 5-1 win for Everton at Brighton at the start of the week and that should give them confidence going forward because it’s in their own hands now. That can make a difference.

“It’s very important for Everton, at home to Manchester City on Sunday, not to get beat up badly. There’s no shame in losing to City but that confidence could drain away and the 5-1 win will be a distant memory if they take a drubbing.

“Sean Dyche has not brought the major improvements expected and that’s why Everton are still under threat.

“They are all looking for someone to step up and produce the unexpected. Now is when you can really judge a player. Cometh the hour, as they say.”

Crazy

Souness is hardly someone who is going to love Everton and Dyche, and he’s probably revelling in the fact that we could be a Championship team next season.

But it’s hard to know what more he expected Dyche to be able to do with this squad considering the fact he’s had no striker for a lot of the games he’s been in charge of and has had to deal with a lot of injuries and suspensions too.

Since taking over Dyche has accumulated 17 points for the team, which is more than half of the total we have accumulated throughout the season.

Without him we would already be confirmed as relegated and as it stands our future is in our own hands and dependent on the results we get rather than anyone else gets.

We couldn’t have asked for much more than that when he joined and if he can keep us up then he’s delivered, so Souness should just keep quiet.
