Alan Myers shares Wout Weghorst Everton update amid Manchester United transfer speculation

Everton are not interested in a move for Manchester United’s on-loan striker Wout Weghorst, according to Sky Sports journalist, Alan Myers.

The 30-year-old is currently on loan at Old Trafford from newly promoted Burnley, where he is contracted until the summer of 2025.

TalkSPORT reported (their official Twitter account, 4 June) that Everton were showing an interest in the Dutch forward.

However, Myers has revealed that this is not the case.

“My understanding is Weghorst is not on Everton’s list of targets,” wrote Myers (via Twitter, 5 June).

This would be a typical Everton signing, wouldn’t it? For too long, the board have targeted players who are well past their sell-buy date. Weghorst would firmly fall into that category. The Toffees need a goalscorer. Apart from one remarkable goal in a World Cup quarter-final, it’s hard to remember the 30-year-old doing much else.

Furthermore, his age is an issue. He would command a hefty contract and would give Everton one or two years of good service before moving elsewhere. Smarter decision-making is required.

The days of handing out large contracts to players who are past their best need to come to an end. The Toffees have also been linked with Sunderland’s Jack Clarke. This is a move we can get behind. The 22-year-old had an electric 2022/23 season and would be a long-term investment at Goodison Park.

Targeting younger players who can make an impact for a long period of time and then be sold on for profit has to be the route to go down.
