Everton transfer news as Wout Weghorst lifeline on cards at Goodison Park
Everton are “set” to offer a lifeline to Wout Weghorst following his disappointing spell with Manchester United, according to the Daily Mirror.
The utility man is due to return to Burnley, with Erik ten Hag said to be choosing not to take up the offer to bring his compatriot to Old Trafford on a permanent basis.
This update comes after talkSPORT initially reported that the Toffees want the Dutch international, who could be set for a reunion with Sean Dyche, having played under him for the Clarets in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

As outlined by the Mirror, there is a dire need for attacking reinforcements at Goodison Park over the Summer.
“Things haven’t quite gone to plan for the Burnley man with Weghorst scoring just two goals in 31 appearances in all competitions – none of those coming in the Premier League,” it said.
“United did have an option to make that deal permanent but the chances of that being activated now appear remote.
“It is reported that Everton could make a move for Weghorst’s signature as they too attempt to add to their attacking options after they narrowly stayed up. The Toffees endured their own frustrations in front of goal throughout the 2022/23 campaign.”

Functional
In terms of the future prospects for Weghorst, it is effectively a three-way situation with this latest interest from Everton.
A move to Merseyside would provide a way out for him in more ways than one as he isn’t going to return to Manchester United for next season, nor is he likely to feature in Vincent Kompany’s plans for Burnley’s return to the Premier League.
Despite his modest goal return this season, a key area that the Toffees must improve in, it appears that Dyche wants to work with the 30-year-old once again. He has a penchant for utilising tall, imposing players in attacking areas such as the Dutchman who would offer something different to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as well as further expected arrivals.
Weghorst is a functional player who can operate in different roles as required but as much as that is a good attribute for the team, he hasn’t managed to hit the goal trail in the Premier League so it is not a signing story that will get the Evertonians excited.
