FA in talks with Everton sensation Tom Cannon

The Football Association (FA) are in talks with Everton youngster Tom Cannon about committing his future to England, according to newspaper journalist Alan Nixon.

The Toffees striker was born in Liverpool but qualifies for the Republic of Ireland through his family.

He has already played for Ireland at various youth levels, but the FA are now keen to convince the player to play for England, in a similar situation to West Ham ace Declan Rice.

“England are trying to talk Everton striker Tom Cannon into picking them ahead of the Republic of Ireland,” Nixon wrote on his Patreon.

“The FA have contacted the Liverpool-born hit man and offered him the chance to play in the next under-21 side after the European finals this summer.

“Cannon will want time to make his choice as he cannot switch allegiances twice. The same move was made by Declan Rice and he has never looked back at club and country level.”

Huge decision

Cannon was definitely in line for a first senior Ireland call-up in the near future, such was his impressive loan campaign at Preston North End this season.

The 20-year-old scored eight times from his 20 Championship matches, as well as banging in 12 goals for the Toffees across the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy competitions.

He has since returned to Goodison Park, and could face a tough decision this summer regarding his club future, whether it be to stay at Everton and fight for a first-team place, venture out on loan once again, or indeed leave the club altogether.

But perhaps a bigger decision awaits regarding his international future, with the youngster desperate to make the right choice, one that will impact his entire career.

Ireland will be gutted if they are to lose another player to England, having already lost the hugely talented Rice not so long ago.

Fortunately, however, they do have Brighton’s star striker Evan Ferguson among their ranks, with the young forward set to become a key player for his country in the years to come.
