Everton ‘barged aside’ in pursuit of Che Adams with Burnley now favourites for transfer

Everton have been “barged aside” in their transfer pursuit of Che Adams with Burnley now the favourites for his signature, according to TEAMtalk.

The same outlet reported on 22 May that the Toffees were interested in signing the £12million-rated striker after Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League.

However, after the departure of long-serving forward Ashley Barnes at Turf Moor, manager Vincent Kompany has made the Scotland international his number-one target.

The 26-year-old, who has scored 31 goals from 145 appearances for the Saints, is now most likely to join the former Manchester City captain at Burnley.

Rinse and repeat

Although Burnley are now the favourites to sign Adams, Everton shouldn’t be too disheartened.

Yes, Sean Dyche is in major need of incomings to bolster his attacking line, but the Saints striker looks an all-to-familiar transfer trap that the club fell into this time last season.

The signing of Neal Maupay last season looked incredibly similar to this pursuit of Adams. Both strikers are almost identical in style of play, and the modest fee is also striking.

However, Everton need to learn from their mistakes and realise that Adams simply hasn’t scored enough goals over the past few seasons to be worth the projected £12million price tag.

Over the last three seasons, the Leicester-born forward has failed to net above seven goals, with his best campaign in a Saints shirt coming in 2020/21, with nine strikes.

If the Toffees are looking for a proven goalscorer next season, they should walk away from this transfer trap.
