Everton want to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Joel Robles with Jordan Pickford future in the air

Everton want to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Joel Robles on a free transfer after it was announced he’ll leave at the end of his contract, according to Phil Hay.

Robles started the final four games of the season under Sam Allardyce as the Whites were relegated, but won’t stick around in the Championship with his contract expiring.

With Jordan Pickford linked with a move away from the club despite signing a new contract, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reported on his personal Twitter account (12 June) that the Toffees are one team who are considering moving for the Spanish veteran.

Leeds released a statement announcing that Robles would be one of four players leaving at the end of their contracts, but also revealed that he had been invited back for pre-season with a view to re-signing under a new manager.

But while not under contract he is free to talk to other teams, with Everton interested.

Dycheball?

Pickford is an Everton legend at this point and his leadership on and off the pitch simply couldn’t be ignored in our relegation battle this season.

It’s crazy to think that had we lost or drawn to Bournemouth on the final day then we’d be in the same division as Leeds, and this move would likely not be on the cards at all.

But Robles is a giant of a man standing at 6ft 4 and that seems to fit the profile of a Sean Dyche goalkeeper much more than Pickford, who enjoys having the ball at his feet and being a bit more progressive.

With top clubs circling for Pickford and reports that Dyche is open to letting him leave for a big fee to bolster the squad, this would be a huge decline in quality but could be one that the boss really wants.

If Pickford goes and isn’t replaced adequately, then we’ll be in big trouble no matter who else comes in around the pitch. This is one that Dyche surely has to just think twice about.

With that said, Asmir Begovic has left and we are looking for a new goalkeeper so it could well just be fans over-reacting and worrying for no reason.
