Everton injury news as Seamus Coleman in race against time for September already

Everton star Seamus Coleman is said to be in a race against time to get fit for September, beyond the early stages of the new Premier League season, as reported by the Daily Mirror (21 June, Page 53).

That makes him a serious doubt for the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying games with France and the Netherlands.

The Toffees’ stalwart was an influential driving force on and off the pitch, even after his significant injury, as Sean Dyche’s side went on to secure their Premier League survival on the final day of the season.

The Mirror report by Paul O’Hehir outlined the immediate situation ahead from the perspective of club and country.

“The Ireland captain has been sidelined since suffering a serious knee injury playing for Everton toward the end of the Premier League season,” he said.

“And while ACL damage was ruled out, the Toffees have been unable to put a precise timeline on his return.

“It means Coleman, who was handed a one-year contract extension, is still a doubt for September’s internationals.”

With a contract extension agreed upon, all that remains is the final decision from Coleman and for him to return to full fitness to be available for Dyche in the new campaign.

Of course, his capability and influence on the pitch has waned but there is still a place, for now, for the club captain in the squad. He will contribute in addition to the anticipated progress of the likes of Nathan Patterson to succeed him on a permanent basis.

He is a driving force of standards and professionalism. He cares deeply about the club and he represents longevity and continuity from previous years. The bond he holds with the supporters is also an important asset, at a time when relations between those in the stands and the club hierarchy remain cold.

At 34, Coleman is approaching the end of his playing career at Goodison Park but there is still the scope and time for one last chapter to be written.
