The legal dispute between Everton and Carlo Ancelotti has been settled before details of the claim were made public via the court system, according to Simon Goodley in the Guardian [28 June, pg 38].

It has been revealed that the parties “reached an amicable resolution” to their dispute, although Everton declined to comment when contacted by the Guardian, and no further details were given as the agreement was made before they could be made public by the court system.

The Guardian stated that Everton believed “no bonus payments were offered on behalf of the club”, and hinted that conversations occurred between Ancelotti and Alisher Usmanov, the Russian oligarch and former Everton sponsor, about a series of bonuses.

Better for both parties.

Having settled the agreement out of court, it seems Everton would not have wanted further details of the claim being brought up or widely reported on.

The club’s relationship with Usmanov is controversial, with the Russian having been banned from entering the UK by the Home Office in 2021, and further sanctioned in March 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Although Everton repeat that Usmanov “has always carefully observed the Premier League’s rules”, their claims that no bonuses would have been offered or allowed by the club, suggests that the Russian was working individually if these types of payments had been agreed with Ancelotti.

The former Everton boss’ barrister stated that “Carlo has enduring respect for the club’s fans” which could point towards the reasons behind their keenness to agree to settle the case before the full details were revealed.

With the report of an out-of-court settlement meaning the details had not yet been made public by the courts, it seems Everton have avoided their name, as well as their possible relations with Usmanov, coming under further scrutiny.
