Tom Cannon transfer update emerges at Everton amid Preston North End approach

Everton striker Tom Cannon is “expected to stay” at Goodison Park, at least for the coming weeks, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Cannon scored eight times from 21 appearances while on loan from the Toffees at Championship club Preston North End last season.

The newspaper noted that North End have approached the Merseyside outfit over a return for the 20-year-old forward next season.

“Cannon, after a prolific spell for the club’s under-21 side, joined Preston North End in January,” noted the Liverpool Echo.

“The 20-year-old scored eight goals in 21 games for the Deepdale outfit in what was the first loan spell of his career.

“North End have approached the Blues over having Cannon back for the 2023/24 campaign, but given Everton’s current lack of firepower, the forward is expected to stay at the club, at least for the coming weeks.”

Worth a shot?

Cannon hasn’t had much time to impress given his brief senior career so far, but there is no doubt that he caught the eye of the powers that be at Everton during his loan spell at Preston.

Eight goals in 21 matches is not the worst return for a player just starting out, but whether or not it is enough to convince Toffees boss Sean Dyche to give him a run in the first team remains to be seen.

The Merseyside outfit are, however, really struggling in the final third, with star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin constantly battling with injuries, with the futures of both Ellis Simms and Neal Maupay currently up in the air.

That could open the door for Cannon, but the most likely outcome is that Dyche will head into the transfer market and spend the majority of whatever funds he has available on a new first-choice striker.
