Everton have no interest in Jonny Evans after viral social media clip

Everton have no interest in signing Jonny Evans despite a viral social media clip posted by the club where his name was heard, according to Liverpool ECHO.

The Toffees have already signed Ashley Young on a free transfer this summer and fans thought they had figured out the club’s next target after they heard Evans’ name mentioned in a clip posted to the official Twitter account from training.

However responding to those rumours, the ECHO have confirmed the club have no interest in the veteran defender who could end up reuniting with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic following his release from Leicester.

“Everton have no interest in signing former Leicester City defender Jonny Evans,” they wrote (14 July).

“In a video shared on Everton’s Facebook and Instagram pages, Twitter user @ITalkEverton picked up on someone in the background appearing to say, ‘We’ve got Jonny Evans coming in’. This then led to speculation linking the centre-back with a move to Goodison Park.

However, the ECHO understands that Everton have no interest in signing the Northern Ireland international this summer.”

Thank God

This is no slight on Evans or his ability, but he’s past his best and we don’t need him right now at Goodison Park.

He has been the captain of the Northern Ireland national team for years and came through at Manchester United, winning the Premier League title before helping Leicester win the FA Cup more recently.

Everton

But he missed huge chunks of the season last year with injury and is nowhere near the player he once was, and Everton should know better at this point anyway.

James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, Jarrad Branthwaite, Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate are currently all in the squad and capable of playing at centre-back so we’re not light in the position just now and while he’s experienced so are many of them.

It’s not a signing that would have made much sense, so thankfully the rumour has been killed early doors and the fans can stop talking about it now.

In other Everton news, financial problems could see the club forced to sign a player on loan instead of permanently.
