Everton transfer news: Sky Sports pundit wants Mason Holgate cash sale amid loan links to Sheffield United and Southampton

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes Mason Holgate needs to make a permanent Everton exit this summer because a loan makes little sense for the club in a “high-stakes” transfer window.

The 26-year-old is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park for next season after Sean Dyche only gave him four Premier League outings last term, with talkSPORT reporting that Sheffield United surged into advanced talks over a loan on 26 June.

On 11 July The Telegraph reported there had been discussions with Southampton over a move, and Fotomac suggested two days later he had been offered by the Toffees on loan to Besiktas, but Campbell sees no point in a temporary and wants to see a permanent solution found that brings some cash into the club.

“I don’t see what a loan would do for Everton,” the Sky Sports pundit exclusively told Goodison News.

“I’m sure Everton won’t want to loan him out, [but] they’ll want to get him off the wage bill.

“Again, to bring some money in because they need to replace him.

“This is a high-stakes transfer window for Everton because whatever move they make they have to counteract it with something positive.”

More space on the wage bill is better than nothing but Holgate looks to have minimal long-term prospects at Everton, and even a moderate transfer fee would make more sense.

If multiple clubs are interested in a deal then surely at least one would be willing to buy him for a reasonable price, which could be crucial at a time when the Toffees have already sanctioned permanent exits for two players who seemed to have more chance of making an impact in the future in Ellis Simms and Ishe Samuels-Smith.

Finally signing somebody in Ashley Young is a belated starting point this summer but missing out on Rodrigo due to the “financials” was a major disappointment, so if Sean Dyche could get some much-needed cash from Holgate to close an attacking deal it could be vital.

In other Everton news, a striker that the manager likes has been likened to a Premier League star and is now available for a surprisingly low fee.
