Everton transfer news: Sky Sports pundit reacts to Leeds United approach for Tyler Adams amid potential Amadou Onana exit

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Everton targeting Tyler Adams this summer is in order to source a potential replacement should star man Amadou Onana leave Goodison Park, believes Kevin Campbell.

The Daily Mail reported on 19 June that the Toffees had made an enquiry to Leeds United for the USMNT captain, with the 24-year-old part of a selection of Elland Road players wanted this summer including Willy Gnonto and Jack Harrison.

Campbell rates the Whites midfielder but, with Onana mooted as a possible £60million sale that would help fund Sean Dyche’s transfer window, the former Goodison captain sees him as a contingency plan.

The Sky Sports pundit spoke exclusively to Goodison News and considered the possible exit in the context of the interest in Adams, saying: “Yeah they have to look at that because [Onana’s] one real big, saleable asset they’ve got and Sean Dyche might have to cash in, in order to create the funds to then go and bolster the squad.

“I’m sure that’s the thinking in looking at Tyler Adams, who I thought did pretty well in the Premier League.

“I think he’s a very good player. I think it’s just Everton looking at how flexible they could be in the Onana deal came through.”

Neither of the international midfielders appear to be short of suitors this summer, and while Everton are vulnerable to a big-money bid thanks to their financial difficulties Leeds United are equally handicapped by relegation to the Championship.

That should theoretically mean that if major cash was brought in by sacrificing Onana Dyche could then go after Adams and still have money to spare for other positions, most importantly a striker.

Aside from 38-year-old free agent Ashley Young it is once again proving a tough task to land transfer targets, and the longer it goes like that the more temptation there might be to let last summer’s prize purchase leave.

In other Everton news, a late hijack opportunity has opened up after Fabrizio Romano reported talks on the brink of “collapse”.
