Preston North End make ‘very talented’ Everton forward Tom Cannon their top transfer target

Preston North End have made Everton forward Tom Cannon their top transfer target this summer, according to LancsLive.

The news outlet reported on 18 July that there is a “quiet confidence” at the Championship club that they can bring the 20-year-old back to Deepdale, where he spent the second half of last season.

The Lilywhites could be facing tough competition, though, after the Liverpool Echo said on 10 July that Luton Town, Sunderland and Blackburn were all looking to strike a deal for the Toffees academy graduate, who the club’s director of football Kevin Thelwell described as a “very talented young striker” after he penned a new contract last year.

Deserves a chance

It’s no surprise to see there is a lot of interest in signing Cannon after he had a fruitful loan spell at Preston last season, where he scored eight goals in 20 appearances in what was his first real taste of first-team football.

Everton would likely be happy to see him go back out on loan to the Lilywhites after a promising few months there, but if Luton are genuinely interested, sending him to another Premier League outfit could be tempting to see how he adapts to the level.

He does, perhaps, also deserve a chance to show the Toffees what he can do after recording an impressive record for the club’s youth sides and then doing well out on loan.

Sean Dyche is desperate to improve his forward options this summer after his side struggled to score goals last season, with only Wolves finding the net fewer times than them throughout the entire campaign.

It could be worth giving Cannon a shot at the start of the upcoming season – even if it’s just off the bench – but it appears as though he could be set for another spell out on loan.

In other Everton news, the door could be open for the Toffees to bring in a forward after his move to a European club fell through.
