Everton don’t want to overpay for Che Adams, could sign pre-contract with Euro clubs in January

Everton want to sign Southampton striker Che Adams but are reluctant to overpay as he enters the final 12 months of his deal, according to the Daily Mail.

Writing on their official website (21 July), it’s reported that the Scotland international is a target for the Toffees, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth as well as clubs abroad.

But so far he isn’t close to a move as Southampton are demanding too much despite his contract status, meaning there is a possibility he stays and signs a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.

“Striker Che Adams is in a similar situation to Salisu, attracting interest but from clubs who are reluctant to overpay with his contract expiring next summer,” they wrote.

“Adams is wanted by Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Everton plus clubs overseas, though his foreign admirers could also wait to secure Adams on a pre-contract agreement at the start of next year.”

Sensible

Everton are not in a position where we just have money to burn to bring in the players that Sean Dyche wants, and that means we have to be much more careful about our business in the transfer window.

Adams is a proven Premier League player and would no doubt provide something in this squad that we don’t currently have, which is proven availability and an ability to compete with Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the starting striker.

But if Southampton are adamant that they won’t be letting players leave on the cheap, despite their relegation and the fact that Adams is in the last year of his contract, then there is little Everton can do about it.

We have to be sensible and with a chase for Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto very much on the cards, we have to prioritise our targets to spread our cash as much as we can.

Adams would be great, but he’s not the best player we can sign in attack this summer and with the money Southampton want it’s probably sensible not to enter too much into talks just yet.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have been working on a deal for this ‘Special’ forward since April.
