Everton make Tom Cannon transfer decision as loan exit on the cards

Everton are set to send Tom Cannon back on loan to Championship side Preston this season, according to the Northern Echo.

The outlet reported online that Sunderland, who had been linked with a permanent move for the forward, are set to miss out.

Instead, Cannon, they say, will once again link up with Ryan Lowe’s side, for whom he scored eight goals in 20 Championship outings last term after joining on loan in January.

On Thursday, LancsLive reported Lowe as saying on Cannon: “It’s not fair to speak about TC at the moment because he’s not our player.

“Everyone knows how we feel about TC and he knows, but ultimately he’s an Everton player. When we are given the nod – if we are – to be able to do something, then we’ll obviously look to do it.”

Slightly surprising

The news that Everton are looking at sending Tom Cannon back out on loan for a full campaign in the Championship is in itself not altogether surprising.

It is after all quite a logical step to take for a player who is only 20 and would no doubt benefit from regular football in a hugely competitive league.

What is slightly surprising, though, is the timing of the decision especially given Everton are not exactly blessed with firepower at the moment.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury record means he cannot be relied upon fully, Neal Maupay endured an awful first campaign at Goodison Park, and Ellis Simms has been sold to Coventry City.

So, if Cannon is indeed being allowed to depart on loan then Everton are running the risk of leaving themselves short of striking options once again. Of course, Everton fans will be hoping that if a loan is sanctioned it means Sean Dyche is confident of reinforcements arriving to boost Everton’s forward line.
