Everton transfer update: Two names ruled out as third summer signing closes in – Sky Sports’ Alan Myers

Everton are closing in on their third summer signing after wrapping up a deal for Arnaut Danjuma on loan, with Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers classifying it “progressed”.

Dutch winger Danjuma was announced on Sunday (23 July) at the second time of asking, having backed out of a loan in January to head to Tottenham instead, with free agent Ashley Young already signed on a permanent deal.

Now the third arrival is on the cards and Myers has clarified that it is not set to be either of Wout Weghorst or Che Adams, after the two strikers were linked to Goodison moves [90min, 11 July and Football Scotland, 15 July].

Replying to questions from Toffees fans on Twitter on Sunday Myers pointed out the next man is will be the “3rd” and replied “I can” when asked to rule out the Burnley and Southampton men.

In terms of an update on the progression of the next deal the Sky Sports man wrote: “Not today but it’s moving positively” and “Progressed I think”.

Action

Everton fans will have long learned not to get ahead of themselves, but at long last there is some incoming activity to counterbalance the departures.

If the third name through the doors is the long-awaited striker signing then it will put a much more positive light on the rest of the window, assuming it is a name who gets the fanbase excited.

Weghorst could hardly be more of a Dyche player if he was built in a lab, but he is unlikely to get supporters itching to see him action after his exploits in the Premier League with Manchester United and Burnley – two goals in 37 appearances combined, while Adams feels like he has a lot of parallels with Neal Maupay.

Everton

A decent forward on his day from a south coast club who doesn’t necessarily fit what is being played at Goodison Park seemed like better than nothing a year ago with the £15million arrival of the former Brighton man, but proved to be a major let down, so risking the same mistake again would probably be unwise.

Danjuma’s arrival makes a wide forward less of a priority, although the links to Willy Gnonto from Leeds United refuse to go away.

But it is striker that is the biggest question with Maupay ineffective, Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fitness issues endless, and Tom Cannon tipped to follow Ellis Simms out of the club [Northern Echo, 23 July].

After almost a year without reinforcements it is a boost to have Danjuma, 26, in on top of Young, 38, but an exciting name for the third could really increase confidence as the new season closes in.

In other Everton news, a leading Premier League scorer is in the club’s sights and a BBC pundit now believes his club will be forced to shift him.
