Sheffield Wednesday want Everton striker Tom Cannon amid Preston North End and Sunderland links

Tom Cannon “could also leave” Everton this summer with Sheffield Wednesday now after the young striker, according to Mail Plus.

The Toffees academy product, 20, spent the second half of last season on loan at Preston North End and impressed by scoring eight times in 20 Championship appearances.

PNE have had talks with Everton over a return more than once, while Sunderland also discussed a move for him after missing out on bringing Ellis Simms back to the Stadium of Light [Liverpool Echo, 10 July].

Cannon was then spotted in attendance at Deepdale on Saturday as he recovered from an injury that has kept him out during the Toffees’ preseason [Joe Thomas, 22 July].

But according to Simon Jones in his Mail Transfer Confidential it is the Owls who are now looking to sign him, and he could be the latest to go during the window.

Wanted man

As with Simms, it seems risky to let another striker leave the club when Everton have been so short of options in attack over the past year.

But if Sean Dyche doesn’t feel that he is ready to contribute regularly in the first team then he has already shown with the sales of the former forward to Coventry, and Ishe Samuels-Smith to Chelsea, that he will sacrifice potential for cash today during this window.

If Wednesday are set to rival PNE it might help Everton get a slightly better price, but it seems unlikely that Cannon would command a huge fee either way.

The race to finally sign a senior option in El Bilal Touré appears to be on the brink of a conclusion, and if the club are signing up to spend potentially north of £30m on the Almeria forward they will need all the incoming cash they can get.

Questions marks surely remain around Neal Maupay’s future, as his first season at Goodison Park was a nightmare, and unless Dyche has found a more suitable way of using him it may not improve.

If Dominic Calvert-Lewin can stay fit then it would relegate the whole equation from absolute the top priority, but that has not proven possible in the past two years so for now it is a key focus.

Cannon appears not to be part of the picture going forward, so whether he ends up at Hillsborough, Deepdale or elsewhere is perhaps the main consideration now.

In other Everton news, three Toffees targets are now pushing to get out of their current club and could be available.
