Everton board update: Sky Sports pundit reacts as George Browning mooted to replace Bill Kenwright

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell doesn’t care if Everton get an Evertonian to replace Bill Kenwright as the chairman, as long as they appoint somebody who is good at their job.

Farhad Moshiri reportedly talked the 77-year-old out of resigning along with the other board members on 12 June, but Toffees fan George Browning is expected to join the board along with Andy Bell once the MSP Sports Capital deal is announced and has been mooted as the possible successor.

Campbell believes that having a blue at the key position is a “bonus” but doesn’t think it is more important than competency in the role, which he feels has been sorely lacking for too long.

The Sky Sports pundit exclusively told Goodison News: “I don’t think it needs to be an Evertonian at all.

“If it is it’s a bonus but there’s many chairmen at clubs who are not necessarily blues or reds or whoever but they’re just good at what they do.

“That’s what you need, somebody competent, with a classy edge, who can make the right decisions and get that club moving, that’s what it’s about.

“So whether he’s blue or not I don’t care. I want somebody in who’s going to help the club progress.

“We say that [it’s the basics] but when was the last time that Everton have progressed? Just do the basics right, but it’s not been done. So that’s the frustrating part.”

Everton

The logical presumption is currently that Kenwright does move on once the transfer window closes, or when the investment deal is confirmed, whichever comes sooner.

But it has been somewhat of a fool’s errand trying to predict the upcoming sequence of events at the top of the club in recent months so there is always space for a surprise, unwanted or otherwise.

Members of the board that had grown deeply unpopular with sections of the fanbase were labeled as loving Everton and the results were not good, so if Browning is to be the new chair he will need to bring more than just his support for the club to the table to improve matters.

In other Everton news, spending is to be offset by the sale of another first-team ace, he’s “ready” to go.
