Everton resignation draws ‘big shame’ verdict from Sky Sports pundit board member was ‘really good to’

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes Graeme Sharp is a “lovely guy” who has had the mess at Everton reflect badly on him when it shouldn’t have.

The former Toffees striker resigned from his non-executive position on the board on 12 June along with Denise Barrett-Baxendale and Grant Ingles, after months of unrest and protests against the club’s hierarchy.

But former captain Campbell is sad that Sharp got caught in the middle of the situation and has highlighted how much he thinks of his predecessor as a Goodison Park goalscorer, but is sceptical about the prospect of him coming back to a similar role at a later date.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the Sky Sports pundit said: “No, I don’t see it.

“Sharpy was really good to me when I got to the club and he’s an Everton man. I just think what’s gone on is reflecting badly on him and he’s not a bad guy, he’s a lovely guy.

“Could there be another role? I don’t know. Maybe down the line when things have settled but at the moment no.

“It’s a big shame.”

If Sharp was appointed to the board to be a recognisable face from the past, intended to make it a more palatable entity for fans it didn’t work, with the club legend ending up guilty by association.

Perhaps in time, once a new permanent board is in place and likely once the club have moved into the new stadium and aren’t battling relegation repeatedly, Sharp can retake his former position in the eyes of supporters.

But there are a lot of hurdles to clear yet, with success on the pitch ultimately the key factor, so for now the situation is absolutely an unfortunate one, but with change necessary he has perhaps become collateral damage of an unpopular regime.
